No more iPhone scratches after firm rolls out screen coating that heals ITSELF up to 20,000 times
The days of scratched smartphone screens could be over after the invention of the self-healing coating.
Japanese chemical specialists Toray claim their ‘self-cure’ covering can remove marks in 10 seconds and be scratched up to 20,000 times.
The ultra-thin coating, which is just 1,000th of a millimetre thick, heals quicker at lower temperatures, according to the firm.
But it should be able to take some serious pounding nevertheless.
The layer features elastic and cushioning properties which allows the glossy surface to reappear after being scratched.
After demonstrating tests today using a wire brush – but not releasing video to verify its effects – the company said it to start using it as a decorative layer on a series of as-yet unannounced notebooks plans.
It will also sell the coating separately for phones, which is potentially a much bigger market.
The firm claims it is competitive with other hard-coating offerings such as Gorilla glass, which can only transmit at 90 per cent quality.
Although the surface is extremely thin, the product as yet has not been tested by anyone outside the firm, so it is not known how it affects the touch-screen products.
