Iran Begins Nuclear Talks With Six Nations

ISTANBUL — Talks between Iran and six world powers about the aims of its nuclear-enrichment program began on Saturday morning with a plenary session of all parties. European and American officials suggested that a serious commitment from Iran to negotiate may be enough to continue the talks at another round in late May, possibly in Baghdad, as Iran has suggested.

Iran agreed to resume these talks with six major world powers — the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, plus Germany — after more than a year without any negotiations, raising hopes in the West that Tehran might be ready to strike a deal over its nuclear program, which it denies has any military intent.

Turkmen president wins on racing track

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan: Turkmenistan’s authoritarian leader has proven he doesn’t only win elections easily, coming first in a car race he wasn’t even supposed to take part in.

President Gurbanguli Berdymukhamedov drove to the racing track in a Bugatti sports car Saturday morning ostensibly to give his blessing to the former Soviet Central Asian nation’s maiden automotive competition.

While an event presenter introduced the president, he received a request nobody in Turkmenistan would be likely turn down. “Can I take part?” Berdymukhamedov asked.

Pro-Putin party suffers new setback in polls

MOSCOW – President-elect Vladimir Putin suffered a setback on Monday after seeing his party’s candidate trounced in a mayoral race that became the focus of Russia’s nascent protest movement.

Official results from the central city of Yaroslavl showed ruling United Russia party candidate Yakov Yakushev picking up just 27.8 percent of the vote in a Sunday runoff against local independent rival Yevgeny Urlashov.

Mayoral candidate Yakov Yakushev speaks to the media during a mayoral election in the city of Yaroslavl, some 250 km (160 miles) northeast of Moscow April 1, 2012. Local media reported numerous instances of falsification on Sunday as residents of the provincial city voted in a second round for a new mayor.
